Growth without relevance is only temporary.

Short-term acquisition can create movement, but durable growth depends on relevance: a proposition, experience and message people continue to choose.

A brief acid-lime growth spike giving way to a durable network of relevant customer paths

A business can buy attention, discount a conversion and capture existing intent. None of those actions proves that customers will continue to choose it.

Short-term performance can hide a relevance problem. Acquisition rises while repeat use stays weak. Traffic grows while qualified demand does not. Promotions produce volume that disappears when the incentive ends. The numbers move, but the business has not become more meaningful to the people it needs to serve.

Durable growth connects market attention to a proposition, experience and operating capability that remain valuable after the campaign is over.

Demand capture is not demand creation

Search, marketplaces and performance media are effective at converting existing intent. The risk is assuming that efficient capture means the underlying market has expanded. If competitors can bid for the same customer and the only difference is price, growth remains exposed.

Demand creation gives people a reason to consider the category, understand a new use case or prefer a specific approach. It often works over a longer horizon, which makes it easier to underfund and harder to attribute.

Relevance is specific

A broad claim such as “better service” does not create relevance. Customers need to recognise a problem, consequence or aspiration that matters in their context. The strongest growth work therefore begins with a sharper commercial question: whose behaviour must change, why has it not changed already, and what evidence could make the next step reasonable?

This is also why local context matters. A regional proposition may be strategically consistent while the proof, channel and trigger differ by market or audience.

The experience must sustain the promise

Marketing can accelerate trial, but the product and service determine whether the growth compounds. Friction in onboarding, fulfilment, support or renewal converts acquisition spend into churn.

Teams should examine the full path from first signal to repeat value. That requires communications, growth, product, technology and operations to share the same outcome rather than optimise separate dashboards.

Signals of durable relevance

  • Qualified demand rises, not only raw lead or traffic volume.
  • Customers progress faster because the proposition is easier to understand.
  • Repeat behaviour strengthens without increasingly heavy incentives.
  • Organic advocacy appears in the language customers actually use.
  • Commercial learning improves the offer, experience and message together.

Growth deserves to be measured in movement, but the important question is what kind of movement it creates. A spike can be useful. Relevance is what allows momentum to remain.
